Senior/Staff Design Engineer

Description:

Design Engineers are responsible for aspects of complex projects related to product design and development, with focus on innovative mechanical and electromechanical medical devices that address customer needs.This position will have a clinical aspect, as well as mechanical engineering.

Duties:

Sr. Design Engineer

  • Provide Leadership - Works on a cross-functional project team through all phases of the product development process, providing guidance and mentorship to less experienced team members. Plans and executes projects from concept through launch.
  • Execute Design Process - Works closely with other members of the project team and physicians to define user needs, generate design concepts and develop detail designs. Provides guidance and mentorship to less experienced team members in all aspects of design execution.
  • Execute Design - Performs design and analysis (such as tolerance analysis, FEA, DOE's, simulated use testing, etc.), and leads design activities of medium complexity product elements and supports development of product and process validation plans and testing.
  • Organize - Significantly contributes to aspects of project management including scope definition, scheduling, budgeting, and contingency planning.
  • Intellectual Property - Strong understanding of patents. Executes limited patent searches to understand current state of the art and potential white space. Contributes to business value through innovation and patent filing.
  • Supervisory Responsibility - May be responsible for accomplishing work through outside resources (e.g., consultants, contractors, design suppliers)
  • Other duties as assigned.

Staff Design Engineer
Note:
It is assumed this level is capable of the duties described for the lower level positions.

  • Supervisory Responsibility - May be responsible for accomplishing work through outside resources (e.g., consultants, contractors, design suppliers)
  • Other duties as assigned.

Travel

  • Must be able to travel up to 10% of the time; both domestic and International travel may be required.
  • Typical work related travel assignments range 2-5 days, and as such overnight, out-of-town stays are required.

Qualifications:

  • Customer Facing - Trains sales representatives clincally through technical education. Gives presentations and makes customer visits. Troubleshoots and solves problems for the sales force as well as customers. 
  • Clinical Knowledge - Conducts usability studies and transfers them into technical requirements. Creates white papers, IFUs, guides, competitive studies and service manuals. Runs labs.
  • Communication - Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Collaborative - Demonstrated ability to work and excel in a team-based environment.
  • Interpersonal Savvy - Relates well to all kinds of people. Interfaces effectively with project teams, suppliers, all levels of management and physicians/customers from outside of the organization.
  • Organized and Resourceful - Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and manage a varied workload.
  • Learning Agile - expected to develop an expert knowledge of our product lines and detailed knowledge of various anatomies and pathologies.
  • Mechanical Design - Expertise regarding mechanical processes and capabilities that impact design.
  • Design Control - Knowledge in the application of design controls and development processes.
  • Computer Aided Design - Skilled in CAD tools (e.g., Solidworks).
  • Personal Computer - Skilled using Microsoft Office Applications.

 

Senior Design Engineer

  • Required - Equivalent of 7 years related work experience
  • Required - Bachelor degree (BS) in mechanical or biomedical engineering (or related field equivalent) with mechanical emphasis
  • Preferred - Medical device experience
  • Preferred - Advanced degree 

Staff Design Engineer

  • Required - Equivalent of 10 years related work experience
  • RequiredBachelor degree (BS) in mechanical or biomedical engineering (or related field equivalent) with mechanical emphasis.
  • Preferred - Medical device experience
  • Preferred - Advanced degree
