Development Engineer

Description:

Development Engineers are responsible for aspects of complex projects related to product design and development, with focus on manufacturing technologies.

Duties:

Development Engineer

  • Team Member - works on a cross-functional project team through all phases of the product development process. Includes planning and executing projects from concept through the launch and initial production ramp-up. Support and/or lead product changes after launch based on defined needs of the business.
  • Execute Development Process - works closely with other members of the team and suppliers (e.g., component, assembly equipment) to develop products with a focus on manufacturability and assembly.
  • Evaluate Development - performs component and assembly evaluations and qualifications and development of product and process validation plans and testing.
  • Prototype and Ensure Manufacturability - works with design engineering and suppliers to produce prototypes and optimize designs for manufacturability.
  • Flexible - plans and prioritizes multiple activities and tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Senior Development Engineer

Note: It is assumed this level is capable of the duties described for the lower level positions.

  • Provide Leadership - work and provide leadership on a cross-functional project team through all phases of the product development process. Includes planning and executing projects from concept through the launch and initial production ramp-up. Support and/or lead product changes after launch based on defined needs of the business.
  • Execute Development Process - works closely with other members of the team and suppliers (e.g., component, assembly equipment) to develop products with a focus on manufacturability and assembly. Skilled at leading and accomplishing work through others (e.g., suppliers). Provides subject matter expertise to the organization across at least one field (e.g., plastics, metals, DFM/A)
  • Evaluate Development - performs component and assembly evaluations and qualifications and leads development of product and process validation plans and testing.
  • Prototype and Ensure Manufacturability - works with manufacturing and suppliers to produce prototypes and leads activities to optimize designs for manufacturability.
  • Organize - Significantly contributes to aspects of project management including scope definition, scheduling, budgeting, and contingency planning.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Staff Development Engineer

Note: It is assumed this level is capable of the duties described for the lower level positions.

  • Provide Leadership - leads cross-functional project team through all phases of the product development process, providing guidance and mentorship to less experienced team members. Includes planning and executing projects from concept through the launch and initial production ramp-up. Support and/or lead product changes after launch based on defined needs of the business.
  • Execute Development Process - works closely with other members of the team and suppliers (e.g., component, assembly equipment) to develop products with a focus on manufacturability and assembly. Skilled at leading and accomplishing work through others (e.g., suppliers). Provides a high level of subject matter expertise to the organization across multiple fields (e.g., plastics, metals, DFM/A)
  • Execute Development - leads development activities of high complexity elements and development of product and process validation strategy.
  • Organize - leads aspects of project management including scope definition, scheduling, budgeting, and contingency planning.
  • Intellectual Property - Understanding of patents. Executes patent searches to understand current state of the art. Contributes to business value through innovation and patent filing.
  • Supervisory Responsibility - Responsible for accomplishing work through outside resources (e.g., consultants, contractors, design suppliers)
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Assembly Process Risk Assessment - Understanding of Risk Assessment activities and risk mitigation techniques.

  • Assembly Process Validation - Understanding of requirements and procedures for process risk assessment and validation

  • CAD - Skilled in Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools (e.g., Solidworks).

  • PC - Skilled using Microsoft Office Applications.

Travel
  • Must be able to travel up to 20% of the time; both domestic and International travel may be required.
  • Typical work related travel assignments range 2-5 days, and as such overnight, out-of-town stays are required.

Qualifications:

Development Engineer

  • Required - Equivalent of 3 years related work experience
  • Preferred - Medical device experience
  • Required - Bachelor degree (BS) in mechanical or biomedical engineering (or related field equivalent) with mechanical emphasis.

Senior Development Engineer

  • Required - Equivalent of 7 years related work experience. Must include Manufacturing and New Product Development experience.
  • Preferred - Medical device experience
  • Required - Bachelor degree (BS) in mechanical or biomedical engineering (or related field equivalent) with mechanical emphasis.
  • Preferred - Advanced Degree in field is desirable but not required.

  • Required - Equivalent of 10 years related work experience. Must include Manufacturing and New Product Development experience.
  • Preferred - Medical device experience
